Enable Do Not Disturb Based on Your Current Location or Event
If you don't want to be bothered while you're at work, at an event, or even working out, you can now turn on Do Not Disturb based on your location.
- To do this, simply open up the Control Panel and long-press (or Force Touch) the Do Not Disturb icon.
- Then select 'Until I leave this location.'
- If you are at a scheduled event, you will also have the option to choose 'Until the end of this event.'
Do Not Disturb helps you be more productive by keeping you off your phone and focused on the task at hand. And by enabling the location setting, you won't have to remember about turning the feature off later on.
Use iCloud Keychain for Password Management
Instead of filling out user information every time (and being forced to remember every single password) it's much easier to use a password manager.
Apple's own password manager, iCloud Keychain, is super helpful, especially if you want to save your passwords across all of your Apple devices.
It will even generate strong passwords for you and save them on iCloud Keychain, providing better security and a simplified user experience.
Create Custom Text Shortcuts
Productivity Hacks To Love Or Loathe
With the amount of text messages and emails you likely send on a daily basis, wouldn't it be nice to reduce the amount you have to type? You can do that on your iPhone by adding your own custom shortcuts.
Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement. Here you can add shortcuts to phrases that you use most. For instance, you could add '
Shake to Undo Typing
Gestures are up-and-coming in iOS 13. iOS 13 lets you swipe left with three fingers to
Use the Shortcuts App for Everything
Apple introduced the free Shortcuts app so that users can get more done using their iPhones. You can either choose from the set of curated shortcuts in the app's Gallery, from other online sources (like ShortcutsGallery.com
Add Your Own Siri Shortcuts
If you were an early iPhone owner, you likely remember how painful the first iterations of Siri were. Early voice recognition technology was both painful and funny. But Siri has gotten better with each iOS update, and now she's able to perform functions like creating reminders, turning on Do Not Disturb, and much more.
Now you can also create your own Siri Shortcuts. Go to Settings > Siri & Search > then tap the + icon to add one of the Suggested Shortcuts, or browse All Shortcuts for more options. Then you can create your own phrase to launch one of the specific functions.
Drag and Drop the Cursor
Previous iterations of iOS made it slightly frustrating to get your cursor in the right position. Now anyone can use their native keyboard to drop the cursor in the perfect spot with the trackpad option.
Tap and hold the spacebar to activate, then drag your finger around to drop the cursor.
This used to be available only on 3D Touch-enabled devices, but it's now available on all devices running iOS 12.
Deliver Notifications Quietly
iOS 12 brought us grouped notifications to help keep the Lock Screen less cluttered. Now you don't have to scroll through endless notifications just to find the most important ones.
But did you know that you can also have your notifications delivered 'quietly' on your iPhone?
- Swipe right to left on any specific notification and tap 'Manage.'
- Then you have the options to either Turn Off or Deliver Quietly.
This keeps your phone from chiming and/or vibrating with every news, social media, and mail update.
Take Photos with the Volume Button
This is a long-time hack that most people still forget about. It can be a whole lot easier to take a selfie or a one-handed photo by opening the camera app and tapping the top volume button to snap a picture.
Bonus: If you have a set of Apple headphones, you can also use its volume up button to take a picture as well.
Tap the Time to Jump to the Top
This is an old hack, yet I still can't believe how many people don't use it. If you're at the bottom of a webpage and want to get back to the top, simply tap the time on your iPhone. This also works while you're in other apps, like Photos or Settings.
Turn on Airplane Mode to Charge Your iPhone Faster
iPhone batteries have gotten much better, especially now with Battery Health and Battery Optimization. Both these features allow you to see how your iPhone activities and charging habits affect the battery.
But what happens when you need to charge, fast? You could invest in a fast charger if speed is important to you. Otherwise, setting your phone on Airplane Mode when charging can help

Enable Downtime to Limit Certain Apps
Smartphone addiction is a real thing — and Apple wanted to curb it by adding Screen Time in iOS 12. This allows all users to track their smartphone habits and how much time they spend on certain apps.
With these insights, Apple also added functionalities that can help users take some time off from their smartphones. One of these is Downtime. Downtime allows you to schedule your own time to take a break from your iPhone. When it is enabled, only phone calls and any other apps you choose will be accessible.
Go to Settings > Screen Time > Downtime. Once toggled on, you can set your own schedule.

Set Time Limits for Apps
Instead of using Downtime, you can also set App Limits for certain app categories like Social Networking or Games. Once enabled, a notification will pop up and alert you that your time limit is up. Naturally, you can ignore this if you want to, but the goal is to help reduce your smartphone usage (or dare we say dependency). It also keeps you from getting distracted by apps that aren't related to work.
